What is Telehealth?

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines telehealth as the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support and promote long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration. Telehealth provides an opportunity for the Physical Therapists of Flaherty Physical Therapy to help our patients progress and manage their conditions when it has been deemed treatment in our practice is not convenient or safe for the patient.

What to Expect During a Telehealth Visit?

HOME SET UP: For your appointment find a spot in your home where you feel you would have enough space to carry out your exercises. Generally, a 4-5’ square should work well. Make sure that you have your PT supplies together as well. You will need access to a computer/iPad with a webcam.  Practice setting it up so that your therapist will have a full view of your body in order to observe you performing exercises or to assess movements.  We have found that placing it in on the back of a chair relatively straight up and down tends to work the best.

DOXY.ME: We are using doxy.me as our communication medium.  At this time, no storage or recording of patient information is being conducted through Doxy.me.  We are using the most basic format which allows live video communication only. Although they are fully HIPAA compliant, we are not responsible for any unlawful breech of privacy during telehealth sessions.  We are not responsible for any technical problems that may interrupt the session but will make every effort to complete or follow up with phone or email contact to assure any needs left unmet are addressed.

PAPERWORK: Prior to your call, we will also email you our Telehealth Consent form. We need this eventually signed by you and so we can keep a copy of it in your records in our office.

YOUR VIDEO APPOINTMENT: The Telehealth visit will last for 30 minutes. At the time of your appointment you will receive an email with a link to click where you will virtually check in to your appointment. Once you have signed in, we will see that you are in the “Virtual Waiting Room”. when we click on your name each of our videos will be activated and the session will begin!

Your first visit can sometimes be a bit chaotic, so please try to spend some time prior to the call to get your area ready for the call. Once you give us verbal consent to move forward, we will get going with the visit!

The visits will be mostly question and answers to start with. Feel free to update us on how you have been feeling, what you have been doing and what are you needing help with.

We will also ask you to perform appropriate movements so we can see through the video how you are moving and where your limitations are.

We may change your home exercises and at the completion of the call, we will forward you via email any updates to your home program.

Need for follow up visits will be determined based on your status and pending any guidelines we may be mandated to follow regarding frequency of visits.
